Three drivers of “high-performance motorcycles” were pulled over after a state trooper caught them going 151 mph in a 55 mph zone west of Fort Totten, N.D., on Wednesday night, the state Highway Patrol said.
Sgt. Robert Kennedy said the three Devils Lake drivers were “fully cooperative” and pulled over after a state trooper began tracking them down about three miles from the town.
“They pretty much realized that it was wrong once the trooper turned his flashers on,” he said.
Each of the three drivers received a $355 speeding ticket and are expected to be charged with reckless driving — a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and $1,500 in fines.
They were also cited for driving without a motorcycle endorsement on their license and lacking liability insurance.
Kennedy said the driver’s names will not be released until next week when their citations have been processed and said they’re expected to appear in court Aug. 11 in Benson County.
Wednesday’s high-speed motorcycle incident is not the first to occur in the Devils Lake region, he said. A group of eight motorcyclists were cited in April for traveling at high speeds while videoing the ride with GoPro cameras.
“I don’t know if it’s a trend right now or what,” he said. “There’s a lot of bike groups on YouTube with videos of them riding around fast and stuff, so I don’t know if these guys saw that and were trying to do their own thing or what.”
